Three Main Areas Of Your Central Air Conditioning To Pay Attention To

Posted on

You want to do all you can to keep your central air conditioning system working well. It should be properly maintained regularly and you want to know what red flags to watch for. By paying close attention to your air conditioner, you can keep it running properly for longer and avoid paying high electric bills. There are three main areas you need to be the most concerned about and this article will go over them for you.

Compressor: The compressor is the large motor, fan and housing unit that powers the unit. It is what pulls the air in from your home, cools it down with the use of coils and refrigerant and pushes the cooler air back into your home through the ducting.

You want to learn the healthy sounds of your compressor so you can spot trouble as soon as it begins. A healthy compressor should sound like a loud, but smooth running motor. If you start to hear squeals or thuds coming from it then it can indicate a problem with one or more of the parts inside the housing of the unit. An HVAC technician (like those at Hallmark Service Company) should be called out to investigate.

The area directly surrounding the compressor should be kept clean and the unit should be protected from harsh, direct sunlight. You can use a canopy to offer a bit of shade for the unit.

Ducting: The ducting will run through the attic area of your home and it carries the air to and from the compressor. For the most part, the ducting requires very little to no maintenance. However, you do want to make sure you pay attention to odd smells coming from the ducting, as this can indicate something may have made its way in the ducts and died. An HVAC technician can come out and remove the offender for you so you can get rid of the awful smell. Hearing a whistling sound can indicate a leak in the ducting which needs to be repaired.

Filter: The filter is the part of the air conditioning system that you will become the most familiar with. You want to keep a close eye on the filter and clean it any time it has a good accumulation of dust on it. The amount you need to clean your filter depends on whether or not you live in a dusty region, whether or not you have pets in the house and how many people live in the house.

Now that you have a better idea of how to care properly for your central air conditioning, you can keep it in good working order longer.
