Reasons Your AC System Is Producing Hot Air Instead of Cool Air

Posted on

If your central air conditioner system keeps kicking on but is only producing hot air instead of cool air, there is likely a problem with the system that will require professional repairs. There are several reasons an air conditioning system will run but not have the ability to produce cool air, and some of those reasons are listed here for you.

Coolant level is low

The coolant in your system is a material that extracts heat from air. For this process to occur, there must be enough coolant in the system; otherwise, the system cannot perform this operation. When a system stops producing cool air and is just blowing hot air out, there is a good chance that there is not enough coolant in the system.

An HVAC technician will often check this level before doing anything else, as this is one of the most common reasons for this type of problem. If the level is low, the technician could fill up the system with more coolant, and this may solve the problem; however, if the coolant is low, there could be a leak in the system. If there is a leak, it must first be fixed before adding more coolant. If it is not, the coolant added will just leak out again.

The coils are frozen

A second thing that can cause this problem is frozen AC coils. Frozen AC coils are often the result of low coolant in a system. When the system cannot extract the heat from air, it often causes ice to form. This ice will freeze the coils and prevent the system from cooling a house.

The compressor is bad

There is also a chance that the problem is the result of a bad air conditioning compressor. The compressor in your system is the part that converts the coolant into a gas, and this conversion is vital for a system to produce cool air for a house. A compressor will often go bad from electrical problems or from overheating. If the compressor is bad, a technician must replace it in order for the system to begin working properly.

Living without cool air in the summer can be a miserable experience, but you do not have to live like this. You can get help by contacting a residential air conditioning repair service to schedule an in-home visit for diagnosis and repairs of your central AC system.
