How To Boost AC Energy Efficiency

Posted on

When you get routine maintenance for your air conditioning system, you can help prevent breakdowns of your unit on some of the hottest days of the year while also improving the efficiency of the system and extending the life of the system. If you want to lower your monthly utility bills, reduce your carbon footprint and simply take better care of your air conditioning system, here are a few tips that will help increase the energy efficiency of your system.

Check Your AC Filter on a Regular Basis

Once a month or more you should check the filter in your air conditioning system. Rinse the filter with water to remove dirt, dust and any trapped particles that may be creating a clog. When the filter is clogged and requires cleaning or replacing, the unit is working twice as hard as usual.

Close the Curtains and Turn the Ceiling Fans On

You should keep the curtains closed to keep the heat out of the house, particularly on sun-facing windows. This will also help prevent flooring, furniture and décor from fading. At the same time, though, you should turn those ceiling fans on. They are cost-effective to operate and can reduce the stress on your air conditioning system.

Invest in a Dehumidifier

While your air conditioner can decrease the humidity in the air, it is highly recommended to purchase a dehumidifier to do this so that the AC doesn't become overworked. As the dehumidifier removes the moisture from the air, you can turn up the temperature setting on the air conditioner.

Add Insulation to Any Exposed Ducting

If your home has any exposed ductwork, it is important that foam sheets or insulating blankets be added to help contain the cool air as it moves through the ducting. Check for any leaks, and if any leaks are found, patch them with some specialized tape to prevent the loss of cool air and increased energy bills.

Schedule Regular Maintenance Service

It is a good idea for your air conditioning system to undergo routine maintenance at least once per year by a professional. However, in between these appointments, the system should be serviced if you suspect any kind of issue. During routine maintenance, AC professionals will perform an inspection and clean the AC unit, in addition to making repairs for issues that may interfere with the system's efficiency. By dealing with small issues, it will prevent them from worsening and becoming something more serious and/or expensive that may result in a breakdown.
